Meet Jamie Kern Lima

Jamie Kern Lima started her career as a journalist. But when she was on TV, producers often commented on the appearance of her skin. She has rosacea which causes her skin to look red.  Those comments inspired her to create her own line of cosmetics—which eventually became known as IT Cosmetics, a billion-dollar company. But her path to success wasn’t easy. Many retailers refused to carry her products in their stores, and she was told many times that she would never be able to succeed. She believed in herself, however. And she worked hard to build a major company that she eventually sold to L’Oréal. Now she’s written a book called Believe IT. Her book became an instant New York Times Best Seller, and it debuted at #1 on The Wall Street Journal Bestselling Books list. It’s filled with helpful tips that can inspire anyone who has struggled with self-doubt.

Why Jamie Kern Lima Is Mentally Strong

Jamie talks openly about the struggles she experienced with mental health over the years. At the age of 24, she accidentally learned she was adopted (something that had been a deep family secret). When her birth mother initially didn’t want to meet her, she felt rejected, depressed, and anxious. She decided to see a therapist, and she found the experience to be very helpful. She encourages others to access support if they’re able to do so, as she recognizes how talking to a therapist helped her gain clarity and build mental strength.

What You’ll Learn About Believing in Yourself and Mental Strength

Jamie makes it clear that everyone has the ability to believe in themselves. But this requires us to take action. We have to learn to listen to helpful thoughts and tune out the ones that aren’t helpful. This is an important part of mental strength. It’s not helpful to just repeat mantras and accolades about how great you are if you don’t believe them. You need a deep-rooted belief that you’re worthy. Jamie talks about the strategies that can help you learn to truly believe in yourself. And she makes it clear that believing in yourself doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll believe that you can succeed at all costs. Instead, healthy belief in yourself might involve giving something up or changing course—and believing that you’ll be OK when you do.

Quotes From Jamie

“Had I taken all those rejections personally, I never could have eventually turned all those nos into yeses.”“Sometimes knowing when to give up on a dream is as important as knowing when to go after one.”“If we don’t ever share all the stories behind the stories, then people feel alone in their own rejection.”
